PSY 315 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Ingratiation, Arnes, Fundamental Attribution Error
Document Summary
Behavior is just an equation of person and environment. People are not going to behave the same way in every environment. Perception salience you can only observe what you can see. If you"re paying attention to the person, you"ll assume the behavior is attributed to personality, whereas if you"re watching the environment, you"ll assume that the environment is the contribution. Fundamental attribution error more likely to attribute behavior to internal rather than external causes. We don"t consider external aspects, we only look at internal disposition. Situational: she"s under great pressure, and acting goofy because of it. Dispositional: she"s self-involved and clueless, which leads to fae. We clear internal blame when clearly there is an outward influence. Woman who is sad emotional and unstable. Man who is sad having a bad day. We are often unaware of situational cues that affect our own behavior much less others!
