RS 478 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Restoration Ecology, Rangeland Management, Strip Mall
Document Summary
In the us, regulation of the coal mining industry contributed greatly to the modern concept of ecological restoration: surface mining control and reclamation act of 1977: required permitting, bonding and inspection of mines. Permitting required a detailed reclamation plan with a timeframe of completion. Bond release criteria depended on post mining land use (grazing, wildlife, agriculture, etc. ). This act allowed states to take an active role or lead in permitting and inspecting. The act also created a fund to pay for cleanup of mines that were abandoned before 1977: reclamation: the act of returning something to former, better state. Hence, the concept of ecological restoration was proposed as an alternative to reclamation: at many universities, restoration programs emerged within range science programs. Surface mining control and reclamation act of 1977. Definitions through time: ecological restoration (1980"s): the process of altering a site to establish a defined indigenous historic ecosystem.
