Bashir al asad"s father comes to power in 1970"s. Assad still in power, thanks to iran and hizbollah, but only in control of about one third of syria. Syria was police state, state was to serve assads and their war effort against israel. Military regime military was primary pillar. Ba"ath party as channel of upward mobility for syrians. Syria is minority alawite regime from offshoot of shia, but historically hated by. Alawite are less than 10% of syrian population. Syria was a family enterprise passed down to sons. Bashir wasn"t supposed to be leader, should"ve been basa who was being trained to succeed his father, but killed in car accident. Syria had conquered lebanon, but bashir lost that. 2011 protests initially only killed a few thousand people. 1981 muslim brotherhood in hamah hafez al-asad opens fire, approx. 20,000 people dead, syria was peaceful for 30 years.
