Chapter 1 psychology: evolution of a science (continued) Emphasizes positive potential of human beings: induced motion, perception not accurate representation of outside world. The whole is great than the sum of the parts. Stimuli is all the same but the configuration changes our perception of it. We impose meaning on things this comes from our internal processes. Take it in, process it and change it, and either keep it inside or put it back out. Not everything that matters is what you can see. Cognitive distortion e. g. body-dysmorphic such as people with eating disorders, people"s change of perception of their own bodies. Structural imaging (left brains is figure): shows areas of brain death in the alcoholic"s brain. Functional imaging (right brains in figure): image of brain function while performing an act. Explains mind and behavior in terms of adaptive value of abilities that are preserved over time by natural selection. Thoughts, feelings, & behaviors influenced by presence of others.
