Some of the slums are regularized and kind-of within the law. The tight packed slum is a periphery--extreme cases. We must be aware that this is the extreme, but this is wrong that we have these giant extremes. We often have invisible divisions, but the urban forces it to be visible. China is adding the rural internal to the urban. This is similar to what the dutch did a while ago--going vertical. Surfaces of cities and interiors of cities are undergoing large transitions. Our urban future-3billion people (40%) will need proper housing and access to basic infrastructure and services. In some cities, up to 80% of pop lives in slums. Largest slum in the us was in san fransisco for years--mostly former silicon valley. Us has slums, they are just dressed up. With the displacement of the latino community in manhatanville, the local micro-economy was devastated and led to impoverishment.
