If ammonia is used as the nucleophile on the nucleophilic substitution of haloalkanes then amines are formed. The types of products formed depend on the relative quantities of ammonia and the haloalkane used. It is not an effective method for the preparation of primary amines. Under excess ammonia a primary amine is formed and ammonium chloride is the other product. +x: also formed from a 1:1 ratio of haloalkanes and ammonia and hcl will be the second product. Secondary amines are formed when there is excess haloalkane in a 2:1 ratio, or by reacting a haloalkane with a primary amine in a 1:1 ratio. Tertiary amines are formed if any haloalkane reacts with a secondary amine (1:1) or by reacting haloalkanes and ammonia in a 3:1 ratio. Quaternary ammonium salts are formed when haloalkanes react with tertiary amines in a. 1:1 ratio or haloalkanes in a 4:1 ratio with ammonia.
