HER PROCESS: AESTHETICS
1. Theory of beauty--is beauty in the eye of the beholder?
a. NEPA and Scenic Quality Assessment (Policy reasons--why study aesthetics?)
i. What’s the impact of scenic quality to add, for example, a highway? →
requires assessment if the work is getting any federal or state money
b. What influences scenic quality?
i. Most people like a little bit of human presence in a scene helps scenic
quality
ii. Superior view--looking down--has higher scenic assessment
1. Theory of prospect and refuge
a. Prospect: view in front of you → higher elevation means
maybe you can see more?
b. Refuge: there is something behind you to protect you
iii. Land Use Compatibility
1. How gradual vs. how stark are the difference between scene and
manmade structure (road)
iv. Topography
1. Lots of change in elevation=positive
c. General theories
i. Complexity Theory
1. People like a modern amount of complexity → too little=boring, too
much=confusing
2. May have something to do with biology → study of arousal
a. When people have low levels of energy (under-arousal--
dark room, seeing the same object over and over),
subjects may like more complex stimulation
b. Overarousal may make less stimulation more appealing
ii. Information Theory
1. Idea of balance between making sense out of something and it’s
interesting, piques curiosity, exciting → create balance of
understanding and involvement/intrigue
a. Make sense out of it but it’s not trivial
b. If the problem is easy to solve, then who cares?
2. Coherence may be appealing due to underlying structure
3. Complexity: diversity, variety, richness
