EDUC 2710 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Desegregation, Fourteenth Amendment To The United States Constitution, Fisk University
Document Summary
Set up by wealthy white philanthropists (peabody, rockefeller, gates, baldwin, ogden) Opened schools/programs based on industrial education for african-americans. Would boost the economy for northerners and southerners. Trying to stimulate the agriculture and textile economies. Thought they might pay black workers for less if they were in the industry business. Didn"t want economic source going north (would raise wages in the south) Created an opportunity that would not have been offered otherwise. Beecher argued that schools should hire more women teachers. A call to educate women to fill roles as teachers. It is in women"s nature to educate because of their maternalism, patience, discipline, etc. Wanted women to have the chance to earn a wage outside the home. Economic argument: women would work for less money than men would. 10 kids/adult was the model school system for the world. Not affordable in america, so beecher suggested hiring women at cost.
