ILROB 1220 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Concertmaster, Departmentalization, Employee Engagement
Organizational Structure: Orpheus Case
● How job tasks are divided, grouped, and coordinated
○ Work specialization
○ Departmentalization
○ Centralization/decentralization
○ Chain of command
○ Span of control
○ Formalization
● Structure of a traditional orchestra:
○ Work specialization (division of labor)
■ High, people play different sheets of music with perhaps just a few notes
○ Departmentalization
■ Ground by function: string, woodwind, brass, percussion
○ Centralization/decentralization
■ Highly centralized around conductor
○ Chain of Command
■ Conductor, concertmaster, principals for each section, assistant principals
○ Span of control
■ Relatively narrow (i.e. one person controls just a few, becomes very tall
with many managers)
○ Formalization
■ Highly formalized (certain way of dressing, talking to the conductor, how
to sit, etc.)
○ High levels of behavioral synchronization
○ Low levels of employee engagement and satisfaction
● Orpheus Case:
○ Very decentralized - each player has a say, and all are given leadership positions
○ Gains from a decentralized structure:
■ Engagement and commitment
■ Innovation and quality
○ Losses from a decentralized structure:
■ Efficiency (spend too much time listening to others, 3x longer rehearsals)
■ Formal control (no conductor, arguments can happen and take a long
time to resolve)
