Hypothetically, we should be able to tell when people are lying based on their tones and body language. Modest lie detection abilities are surprising because: Seems like it should be obvious when we are lying, therefore assume that we and others are better at picking up lies than we are. We think we"re the target of other people"s attention more than we are. Aware of illusionary transparency -- give a better speech in public anxiety. Knowing that others don"t notice as much when you are nervous.
