Prelim Review
● Step children are more likely to be abused because they do not improve step parent’s
evolutionary / survival fitness.
● Functional difference -- should be left or right, not also in front of and behind you.
● Regardless of what kind of film you watch, it will increase the attractiveness or
unattractiveness felt towards subjects.
● Do not need to be concerned with external validity when establishing that something can
happen, not that it does happen.
○ REREAD MOOK FOR FINAL EXAM.
How do high Machiavellians differ from low Machiavellians?
● Hi Machs do not cheat more than low Machs, but are more likely to deny it longer when
accused.
● Hi Machs are better able to disrupt another’s performance, and they enjoy it more.
● Hi Machs are better able to form beneficial (to them) conditions.
● Don’t differ on:
○ Not better at lie detection.
○ Not better at remembering information about others.
○ Not better at prisoner’s dilemma game.
● What appears to be important for Machiavellian to do better:
○ Needs to be face-to-face contact. The advantage disappears over email, etc.
○ Latitude for improvisation. Need a flexible game/situation where the Mach can
work their magic, so to speak. I.e. playing chess versus playing Monopoly.
○ Leeway for irrelevant affect. Machs usually capitalize on emotions, other factors
to manipulate someone.
● Superiority of Hi Mach performance as a function of the presence of the 3 critical
contextual factors for Mach performance being better: (where in 0-3 is the number of the
factors present in the situation observed)
