PSYCH 1101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 34: Side Effect, Confirmation Bias
Document Summary
Summary: humans are inherently pattern seeking, we interpret patterns using elaborate theories (superstitions) Confirmation bias: we give more weight to information that supports our existing theories, we remember information that supports our theories. Theories about supernatural beliefs: people are motivated to believe in a greater meaning of life because without it life would be meaningless. Believing in religion solves this issue: supernatural beliefs may be a side-effect of cognitive activity. We see patterns where they may not exist. We rationalize these patterns with a belief in supernatural entities. People tend to see things as being intentional even when they may not be present. People see natural occurrences as being done by a high power intentionally: invisible agents can influence morality.
