PSYCH 1102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Cartesian Theater, Behaviorism, Retina
Document Summary
The mind controls the body via the brain - dualism. Mind is what the brain does - functionalism. The mind is physical, but extends beyond the brain - extended mind hypothesis. Dualism - the mind and body are somehow different. Property dualism: it"s all based on physical things, but maybe mental properties are non-physical processing of physical things. Monism - mind and body are the same. Idealism - mind is the only thing that there is, it is all in the mind. Materialism - minds are physical things, follow every rule physical things do. Not meant to have any of these issues with identity theory. Trying to separate what minds do from the physical things that support them. Discussion about octopus and whether higher level thinking exists in animals and whatnot. What matters is the causal role, not implementation. Identical to you, you in every way. This is possible under functionalism and behaviorism.
