Document Summary

Passive (mirror) view: what we see is a mirror of the way the world really is. Active (skill-based) view: what we see is a result of our actively applying concepts to the real world. We need the concept of a face to see a face. People in western cultures have trouble drawing this picture from memory impossible picture . Those in cultures that don"t represent 3d in 2d can easily draw this from memory. Ways of seeing are difficult to unlearn and are both useful and limiting. Theory-laden observations- these depend on concepts and assumptions about how the world works. Observation is theory-laden, meaning we must use theories and concepts to see. Thus it can be disputed, e. g galileo"s way of seeing the moon was contested by the church. Theory-laden observation does not mean that all observation is biased so you are free to choose what you prefer to see/believe.
