Western psychological concepts are not universally valid: normal isn"t always. A person"s sense of self and relations with others. Major area of interest is how cultures shape = personality. Individuals pattern and characteristic way of behaving, thinking and feeling. Study of how various cultures define and create personality, identity and mental health. The process of transmitting culture to infants and other new members of society through both informal &formal processes: longest form, starts at birth ends at death, various cultures enculturate members into having diff, personalities & identities. Ca"s investigate how personalities vary according to cultural context. Others study how changing cultural contexts affects: personality, identity, well being over the life cycle. 1930 1970"s culture & personality studies begins franz boa"s interest: individual developed thru fieldwork, transcultural psychiatric studies established mcgill (culture and psychiatric disorders) Sex and temperament in 3 primitive societies 3 striking differences: in male and female personalities and behaviour.
