GEOL 001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: List Of U.S. States And Territories By Elevation, Suspended Load, Silt
Document Summary
Bed and banks of a bedrock channel are bombarded by particles carried into the flow. Scraping, rubbing, and bumping erodes a bedrock channel and smoothes and rounds the abrading particles (potholes) Rock is gradually dissolved by the flowing water. Corrosion is a type of chemical weathering. Transported material is called the stream"s load. Fine sand, silt, & clay are carried. Largest part of load is in suspension. Settling velocity (speed at which particles fall through) Coarse material including sands, gravels, and boulders. Rolling, sliding, & saltation (jump and skip along stream bed) Maximum load a stream can transport (changes over time) Indicated the maximum particle size a stream can transport. Cut into the underlying strata and typically form in the headwaters of river systems where streams have steep slopes. Form in sediment that was previously deposited in the valley. Streams that transport much of their load in suspension generally move in sweeping bends (deep and smooth)
