Document Summary

Bio 121l - week 10 - lecture 16. Rubisco - enzyme; not efficient - binds to oxygen as compared to carbon dioxide. Plants in very hot, dry environments have evolved alternative photosynthetic pathways to increase wue. In c4 plants, co2 is first bound to pep carboxylase (pepcase), an enzyme that has no affinity for o2. This bound co2 is transported to the bundle sheath cells, the only cells in which the calvin cycle occurs. Co2 is unloaded in the bundle sheath cells and undergoes the calvin cycle like normal, but it is so concentrated that any effect of o2 is swamped out . Cells surrounding xylem and phloem is bundle sheath cells. The c4 strategy increases wue by efficiently utilizing all of the co2 taken into the plant. A lot of carbon dioxide in sheath cells. Cam plants (cacti, pineapple) open their stomata at night when there is less less of h2o.
