Commonly Confused Words
Directions - First, without looking anything up, explain the difference in the following
word pairs or groups. Then, if you have a dictionary or your textbook, look them up and
see how close you were.
1. Accept versus Except
a. accept: receive
b. except: exclude
2. Affect versus Effect
a. affect: usually a verb, to impact or change
b. effect: usually a noun, the result of a change
3. Border versus Boarder
a. border: demarcation line which separates two geographic/political areas,
edge or margin
b. boarder: lodger, someone who lives in a residence of some sort where he
received regular meals in exchange for payment
4. Do versus Due
a. do: verb, to perform an action
b. due: adjective or noun, something that is planned or expected
5. Dominate versus Dominant
a. Dominate: verb, to rule over or overshadow
b. Dominant: adjective, describes a subject, having/exerting authority or
influence
6. Have versus Of
a. Have: have or possess (EX. They have two beautiful daughters)
b. Of: connects a noun with the preceding word (EX. Most of the books)
7. It's versus Its
a. It’s: contraction of it is or it has
b. Its: possessive of the pronoun it
8. Lead versus Led
a. Lead: soft heavy toxic malleable metallic element; bluish white when
freshly cut but tarnishes readily to dull grey or to guide someone towards
something (EX. They are now making pencils without lead. OR He will
lead us to salvation.)
b. Led: accompanied somebody somewhere to show them the way, past tense
of ‘lead’ (EX. We led him to our chief)
9. Lose versus Loose
a. Lose: verb, to fail to win, to misplace, or to free oneself from something or
someone
b. Loose: adjective, not tight
10. Now, Know, and No
a. Now: at the present time or moment
b. Know: verb, to be familiar with someone or something
c. No: negative reply, refusal, or disagreement
