Cim begins with the use of computers to design a product and ends with the assistance of computers in its manufacture. The "integrated" part of cim refers to the fact that everybody can access the product information from one central database: design, manufacturing, production planning and scheduling, shipping, even nancial functions. E ectively, all the planning and execution tasks that were done by hand in cim are done with the assistance of computers. Cad (computer aided drafting), cae (computer aided engineering), cam (computer aided manufacturing), capp (computer aided process and planning), mrp (material resource planning), etc. Cad is used to design the desired product. With the advance in software capability, cae (computer aided engineering) is possible. In this manner, part performance such as stress response, thermal response, etc. can be simulated more accurately and better products designed before they do into production.
