Thermoplastics (tp): will soften and melt in the application of heat. Think of cheese in a pizza, when cooking it can change shape but is still cheese when cooled. Thermosets (ts): will not melt with heat, they will char and burn. In their shaping, a reaction takes place and chemically changes the polymer. Think the dough of a pizza, it will become bread. Elastomers: rubbers, and the can be both tp and ts. Plastics are light, weak, have low service temperatures, can burn, can be transparent, are easily formed into complex shapes. Chemical reaction from mixing of liquids, activating reaction with heat. Cycle: activate (heat/mixing), form shape, maintain shape during reaction, eject. Cycle: heat (to soften/melt), form shape, maintain shape while cooling, eject.
