Chapter 2: the chemical building blocks of life. Bacterial isolates are formed from carbon and nitrogen: cell wall can be determined through chemistry. Evaluation of tests: to understand bacterial structure, metabolism and genetics need to be understood. Organisms are made up of: h, c, n, o, p, and s. Same number of protons but different number neutrons: same element (because of the same proton/atomic number) but are different because of the difference in neutrons/weight. Whenever there are more neutrons on an atom, those (cid:858)extra(cid:859) neutrons are often given away: the radioactivity of the atom can be used to track their movement throughout their body; this is the basis for pet & Valence electrons determine the chemical reactivity of an atom. Gain/loss of electron: gained electron; anion; negative, lost electron; cation; positive, ionic bonds form between oppositely charged ions. Not a true bond; it is just an attraction due to the electron densities of the atoms.
