Document Summary

Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass. The presence of atoms & molecules determines the properties of matter; how they are arranged also determine the properties: properties determine behavior" of matter. Atoms & molecules: matter is composed of molecules which are composed of atoms, therefore, atoms are the building blocks of all matter, most atoms are not found free in nature; they are often in molecule form. To understand the properties of matter by studying the structure of the particles that compose it. State: physical form: depends on the relative position of particles and how strongly these articles interact. Solid: atoms that do not move and are stuck together. Interactions between these atoms occur often and are strong. Liquid: more mobile than atoms in solid matter but relatively tied to each other. Fixed volume but not fixed shape: the ability of the liquid to flow allows it to assume shape of its container.
