KNES 377 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Weight-Bearing, Buoyancy, Specific Gravity

57 views4 pages

Document Summary

Specific gravity: density of object relative to water, s. g. is 1. 0: greater than 1 will sink, less will float. Weight of body submerged is equal to weight of fluid displaced (archimedes principle). Center of buoyancy: cog of displaced fluid and the point at which buoyant force acts on body, when cog and cob are in vertical alignment, it will float upright. If not, there will be roll or pitch. Fluidity of water is affected by resistance to movement plus size, shape, and speed of movement: larger/strangely shaped/fast objects create more drag. Viscosity: resistance to movement caused by molecular friction of fluid. Drag: resistance to a body that is moving through a fluid. Pascal"s law: fluid pressure is exerted equally on all surface areas at any given depth, deeper immersion means there is greater pressure. Effective in reducing edema: place joint in water (non weight bearing) while hydrostatic pressure of water moves on edema.
