Document Summary

Made a very political, radical pop/commercial song; would still be considered unusual today. This is around the time that people start becoming hipsters: in other words, beatnik- inspired. Political awareness: younger generation less accepting of stereotypes. Individuality and virtuosity as statements against racial stereotypes. World war ii 1942-1945: very few records made during war years, bebop developed mostly outside of the music world. Growth of independent record companies after wwii: race records ends, music industry shifts from sheet music publishing to recorded music for radios and jukeboxes. Faster, harder, more difficult, louder than swing. Starts in jam sessions in the early 1940s. Idea of being close to the melody during improvisation becomes trite. Influences almost all of jazz today meant to be very agitated and rough. Came straight out of swing, like almost all people of bebop.
