In terms of civil rights, it it did not happen overnight. After the civil war, the government did as much as they could. Throughout the years, the united states started move towards progressivism. Political compromises were placed in an effort to keep the union together to prevent another civil war. This dwindled the equality for people: 13th amendment-outlawed slavery (1863) Broke the north-south compromise where the south could keep their slaves: 14th amendment-equal protection. You cannot treat individuals under the law, everyone is protected under the rights regardless of whether or not they were a slave prior: 15th amendment-prevents discrimination 1870. You cannot discriminate against individuals, yet in the 1900"s we still have segregated facilities: 19th amendment-women"s rights to vote (1930, 26th amendment- voting age of 18 (1971) Compromise to keep the south: jim crow laws (1870) Southern states passed this so that their life would not be disrupted as much as possible.
