Chemistry 90 Chapter 3 Lecture Notes
Covalent compounds: sharing of electrons between nonmetals
o Name 1st element; name 2nd element and change ending to ide
o Add prefix to element names
Ex: N2O4 = dinitrogen tetroxide
Ex: ClF6 = chlorine hexafluoride
Ionic compounds: transference of electrons between metal and nonmetal
o Metals with fixed charge: Al3+, Zn2+, Ag+, Cd2+, Ga3+
o Name metal 1st, then nonmetal and changing ending to ide
o No prefixes
Ex: Al2O3 = aluminum oxide
Ex: Ga2S3 = gallium sulfide
o Metals with nonfixed charge
o Indicate roman numeral on charge of metal
Ex: CuO = copper (II) oxide
Ex: Cu2O = copper (I) oxide
Ex: manganese bromide = MnBr3
Monoatomic anion: negative ion composed of only one element
Ex: O2-, Cl-
Polyatomic ions: several atoms bound together with an overall charge
Ex: NO3- = nitrate ; PO33- = phosphite
Ex: Na2CO3 = sodium carbonate; MgSO4 = magnesium sulfate
Acids
o Hydrogen atom always goes 1st in anion
o Overall compound is neutral and found in water
Ex: Cl- = HCl(aq); SO42- = H2SO4(aq); PO33- = H3PO3(aq)
o Strong acids: HCl, H2SO4, HNO3, HI, HBr, HClO3, HClO4
o Naming acids: -ide = hydro ic acid (ex: HClO = hydrochloric acid)
-ate = ic acid (HClO4 = perchloric acid)
-ite = ous acid (H2SO3 = sulfurous acid)
Hydrates: molecules attached to water molecule(s)
o CuSO4 * 5H2O = 1 copper (II) sulfate molecule attached to 5 water molecules
Copper (II) sulfate pentahydrate
o BaCl2 * 2H2O = 1 barium chloride molecule attached to 2 water molecules
Barium chloride dihydrate
