Quest for golden fleece: done by jason and the guys known as the argonauts. Aeson: king of northern greek kingdom, he remarries and along comes stepson pelias. Pelias deposes son: aeson"s son is jason (the hero) Sent up into mountains to be raised by centaurs. Decides he will claim his rightful throne. Impossible because the fleece is sacred to ares. It"s at what greeks believe to be the end of the earth. Jason sets off to do task: gets a boat, doesn"t build boat himself, he gets best boat builder who makes it for him. Keel of boat (the center spine) is made out of oak that comes from dodono (sacred to zeus)- has the power of speech. Through this oak, hera can talk to jason: argonauts- each one of them is a hero in their own right. Hera realizes jason is in trouble and gets aphrodite to help her. Aphrodite makes daughter of king fall for jason.
