Relying on english as a 2nd language. Systematic desensitization (sd) focuses on the physical response to apprehension. Sd works on the principle that, by substituting muscle relaxation, people can learn to cope with anxiety-production situations. With sd training, people are gradually exposed to stressful communication situations are taught to relax. Cognitive restructuring (cr) focuses on changing specific irrational beliefs that people hold about speaking. Cr assumes that apprehension is learned and thus, can be in-learned and replaced. Skills training (st) assumes that people"s fears result from inadequate communication skills. Once individuals acquire the requisite speaking skills, their apprehension will be reduced.
