NUTR 132 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Gastric Bypass Surgery, Nutrient, Cognitive Restructuring
Document Summary
Cognitive influences such as social conditions, time restraints, hunger level, can contribute to how much we eat. Perception of hunger and fullness hunger is a scale that can vary: post-ingestive influences food has entered the digestive system, satiation you are full, but your digestive system and brain are working. Brain will realize what nutrients are available. As time passes, your nutrients will deplete and you will slowly begin to feel hungry again, putting you back at physiological influences (1) Nature contributes to obesity: genes may account for up to 70% of weight differences. Set point theory: theory that we have a genetically predetermined body weight, body resists weight change. Leptin hormone made by fat tissue, regulates (suppresses) appetite: opponents of set point theory. Reduction in calorie intake results in lower metabolic rate. Nature vs. nurture: obesity is nurture allowing nature to express itself, nature (genetics) Location of fat is influenced by genetics. Children of obese parents are at higher risk.
