NUTR 132 Lecture 3: A Nutrition Perspective
Document Summary
Cells needs energy, water, building supplies, and chemical regulators, protein organ systems organs and minerals, oxygen. Organelles- compartments, particles or filaments that perform specialized function within a cell. Cell- basic structural & functional component of life. Different types of cells are specialized perform particular functions. Holds cellular contents together (cytoplasm & organelle) Regulates flow of substances in and out of cell. Cholesterol is part of each cell membrane- rigidity & structure. Combination of fluid material and organelles within the cell. Convert food energy into a form of energy that cell can use. Cell nucleus- an organelle bound by its own double membrane. Endoplasmic reticulum (er)- where rna is translated to proteins. Golgi complex- synthesized protein for secretion or distribution to other organelles. Lysosomes- contains digestive enzymes for use inside cell for turnover of cell parts. Peroxisomes- contains enzymes that detoxify harmful chemicals. Metabolism- chemical processes involved in maintaining life.
