Document Summary

Learned and innate behaviors: animal behaviors are learned or innate. Innate: any inborn behavior as a result of maturation (passage of time) only, not from practice (not human walking) Humans have reflexive behavior (single response) and learned behaviors, but not innate behavior (series of responses) Learning: relatively permanent change in behavior (potential) or mental processes from practice or experience. Conditioning: process of learning associations between environmental and internal stimuli and responses; no stimuli = no response (series of steps) Classical conditioning (def. learning that occurs when a neutral stimulus (ns) becomes paired with an unconditioned stimulus (us) to elicit a conditioned response (cr); involuntary responses. Unconditioned stimulus (us): stimulus that naturally elicits ur without previous conditioning. Unconditioned response (ur): unlearned reaction to us without prior conditioning. Neutral stimulus (ns): stimulus that doesn"t naturally elicit response of interest (food (us) -> saliva(ur), footsteps (ns) -> no saliva.
