Document Summary

Cartilage is a connective tissue that is weaker than bone, but more flexible: perichondrium is the the connective tissue that covers cartilage where it is not at a joint. Hyaline - found at the end of long bones, trachea, and ribs. Forms most of the fetal skeleton: fibrocartilage - found in intervertebral discs, pubic symphysis, and knee joints, elastic cartilage - found on the ears and nose. Keep trachea open: provide smooth gliding surfaces at articulations (joints, provides a model for the formation of a new bone. Growth patterns for cartilage: appositional growth- growth from outside. Result: larger pieces of cartilage, newest cartilage on outer edges: interstitial growth- growth from inside. Result: larger pieces of cartilage, newest cartilage on the inside. 1/3 organic, 2/3 inorganic: very strong, not brittle, vascular (has blood vessels) Bone: most surfaces are covered in periosteum which is a dense irregular connective tissue, primary component is bone connective tissue, also called osseous connective tissue.
