POLS 155 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Thesis Statement, Universal Health Care, Alprazolam
Document Summary
Don"t let the thesis statement scare you away from writing a good paper. A thesis statement is just a fancy term for a one to two sentence summary of the main idea of your paper. It is your attempt to communicate your essay"s purpose to the reader. It tells the reader what you hope to argue/explain/elucidate about a certain topic. Just because your thesis is strong does not mean your paper will be. Therefore, it will be helpful to think of your thesis as the road map for your paper. It lets your reader know what you are writing about and what you are trying to prove (the map itself), but ultimately, you need supporting points and examples for the readers to arrive to or consider your position (directions). Whether or not one"s thesis is successful is dependent on other factors: analysis and discussion, development, evidence, supporting points, rhetorical devices, organization and language.
