The west allowed you to not paint in a figurative manner. The dogma was radical abstraction because it exemplifies freedom. They wanted art that wasn"t immediately recognizable, something real that you could encounter in space. Do away with the subjectivity and heroism of the artist. Now, the audience is more important than the artist. Let"s give the audience something that creates a presence, and doesn"t immediately tell the viewer the emotion behind the piece. What you see is what you see -frank stella. Important to show art with an object or person for scale. 1962, tony smith, fabricated 1998-- not an object, not a monument. Anthony caro, midday, 1960--amalgamation of different elements that are balanced. Donald judd- same elements repeated, but we accept the elements as one object. Non- relational art: wholeness, not relationship between different elements. How far can they be stretched apart where we can still accept them as one piece, not 4 cubes.
