Tues/thurs 9:30-10:45am: weather forecast- a scientific estimate of the weather conditions at some future time. Chapter 9: weather forecasting: temperature, humidity, cloudiness, precipitation, wind speed, wind direction, who does the forecasting, national weather service (nws) - a branch of the national oceanic and atmospheric. Administration (noaa) that is responsible for gathering and distributing weather- related information. The wmo must also standardize the procedures used by 185 nations and territories to collect the observations. Upper air observations: radiosondes: a light instrument carried by a balloon to take temperature, humidity and pressure measurement vertically through the atmosphere. It is especially useful in data sparse regions such as over the ocean and in the polar regions: polar satellites circle the earth in a north-south direction, geostationary satellites are placed in orbit over the equator. They remain at a fixed point above the earth because they travel at the same rate that the earth rotates.
