Hurricane forecasting: meteorologists analyze surrounding atmospheric conditions to prepare a hurricane forecast (using satellite images, hurricane hunters, dropsondes, bathythermographs, meteorologists use weather models to determine the approximate location and intensity of a tropical cyclone. Hurricane movement: hurricanes tend to form over the warm, tropical north pacific and north atlantic, hurricanes can travel up to 58mph, the path of a hurricane is often erratic and difficult to predict. North atlantic hurricanes: most north atlantic hurricanes move westward or northwestward towards central and north. America: these movements are dictated by the easterly trade winds and interactions with mid-latitude troughs, we can apply the 500mb steering rule to plotting the movement of a hurricane. Hurricane watch: an announcement aimed at a specific coastal area that a hurricane poses a possible threat, generally within 36 hours. Hurricane warning: is issued when sustained winds of 119 km/hr. or higher are expected within a specified coastal area in 24 hours or less.
