Document Summary

Rhonda gay hartman, j. d. , ph. d, august 2000, hastings law journal, adolescent. Giving autonomy to adolescents develops them into adults that can make rational decisions. Autonomy also foster self-responsibility and accountability about one"s own body. In addition to this card, an example where an adolescent needed to make his/her own choice to stay healthy would provide really good evidence. Adolescents have limited autonomy, and this is unjust. Alicia oulette, professor of law at albany law school, 2012. The complexity of the law of adolescence is especially acute in the medical arena. For the vast majority of medical decisions, the law treats adolescents under the age of eighteen like young children. That is, except in the situations discussed below, teenagers" decisions about health care have no legal weight until they have reached the age of legal consent. Instead, the law vests parents with decision-making authority for their teenagers. Thus, a physician cannot legally treat an adolescent without parental consent in most cases.
