Document Summary

Clicker 1: rank the following bonds in order of increasing polarity: h br, h cl, h i. H i < h br < h cl: en trends: en decrease down a group. Lewis symbols: a way to represent valance electrons. Writing lewis symbols for atoms: valance electrons are represented with a dot. How do you determine the number of valance electrons: place one dot per valence electron on each of the four sides of the element symbol. There are four sides of the letter of the element that dots can be placed on. One dot per side until each side as 2 dots or filled their valence electrons: pair the dots (electron) until all the valence electrons are used. The use of lewis symbols is helpful in visualizing simple ionic compounds. Note that na and cl have both achieved a stable electron configuration by forming an ionic bond and therefore satisfy the octet rule.
