Document Summary

Naming coordination complexes: order: cation anion, within the complex ion, the ligands are named in alphabetical order before the metal ion, neutral ligands sometimes have the molecule name, but there are a few exceptions. If the complex ion is an anion we drop the ending of the metal name and add ate. Name each complex ion, give c. n. and geometry: ex: [au(co)2]2so4. Geometry: square planar (d8: ex: ba[cd(oh)4] Complex ion = -2: mn + 2(h2o) + 4(cn) = -2. Given the name, provide the formula of each complex ion (also give c. n. and geometry: ex: hexaaquamanganese(ii) chloride. Copper is an exception electron configuration: [ar]4s13d10. Correct formula for magnesium tribromocarbonylplumbate: mg[pb(co)br3]2. 1: co goes before br3 because co is neutral and br is anion neutral ligands first, then anions in formula. Isomerism in coordination compounds: isomers: same chemical formula but different properties, constitutional (structural) isomers.
