A new york city epicenter for songwriters and song publishers. Songwriing stafs supplied teen idols and others with material to record/perform. Several major stars of the 70"s had their beginnings there (carole king, neil sedaka) Brill building sound became associated with lighthearted teen pop hits (phil spector worked there for some ime) Beatles self contained rock band (regional lare/beach boys california lare) Bob dylan socially relevant, philosophical lyrics (goes into folk to be taken seriously) A new take on old music, more of an urban (smooth, modern) feel as opposed to the country roots of the earlier folk movement. Not a poliical movement at irst but that soon changed. Two branches: tradiionalist (joan baez) acivist (woody guthrie, bob dylan) Gave rise to the protest movement (civil rights, vietnam, marches, rallies, sit/ins, etc. ) No other music at the ime had the social relevance of the acivist folk music.
