ENVS: Nonrenewable Energy
What is Nonrenewable?
Energy types for which the rate of supply is less than the rate of use are non-renewable
Example:
Oil is forming today deep underground, but at a rate many thousands of times
less than our use rate
All energy types can be both renewable and nonrenewable
Example:
Wood:
Renewable if the rate of cutting trees is less than the rate of
growth
Nonrenewable if the rate of cutting trees is faster than the rate of
growth
Nonrenewable energy sources:
Coal:
Basics:
Oldest form of fossil fuels both in age and in use
Made from ancient plants, original energy source is the sun
Largest reserves of fossil fuels
Most coal is found in the United States, Russia, and China
Domestic Challenges:
Trump has pledged to revive the coal industry in the US
While Trump frames the decline of coal as the result of environmental
regulations, market forces (cheap natural gas) are the biggest factor
Oil:
Basics:
One of the three fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas)
Originated as solar energy, transformed by photosynthesis to chemical
energy
Most formed 50 to 150 million years ago
Heat and pressure transform organic material to fossil fuels
Proven reserves and estimated reserves:
Proven reserves:
That which is economically recoverable and known to exist
Estimated reserves:
Estimates based on what we think is there, as well as what
we think we can physically recover
About half of the oil remaining in the ground can be recovered with
conventional methods
Fracking:
Recovery of oil from tight shales (which require fracturing of rock,
or fracking) can add to reserves
Fracking buys time but is not sustainable
