Phillip was alexander"s father and it is debatable but many believe he is the biggest reason for. Greeks believed that wine had to be drunken watered down making it less alcoholic but it also served as a cleaning solution for bacteria in the wine. They had similar cultures and geographically, macedonia was only slightly north of greece. Alexander almost feel greek when you think about it. It is unclear if the macedonians were actually greek and unfortunately, only greek sources have survived. We do know for sure that the greeks saw differences between greece and macedonia. They also clearly feared macedonia because of macedonia"s strong naval force (which could circumvent the several mountain ranges separating the two armies) and because they did not want to lose their government. Herodotus is a descendant of the greek hero heracles but actually lived in macedonia. According to gorgias, achelous, the king of macedonia is a descendant of herodotus.
