HIST 4618 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Genghis Khan, Mongol Empire
Document Summary
China became a multi-ethnic state under mongol rule. Tibet would remain independent all the way until 1951 when mao invaded it and took over the region. Ogedei khan was the 2nd ruler of the mongol empire and the 3rd son of chinggis khan. It is not clear how he rose to power but he undeniably was the 2nd ruler of the empire. Under his leadership, mongolia consolidated their takeover of china, but he would remain in the mongolian capital after the conquest was completed. He originally wanted to wipe out the chinese population and turn china into pasture land for his horses. However, a khitan advisor was able to convince him to not follow through with this plan because china was too valuable. He instead advised ogedei to raise the land taxes. Mongolian soldiers would loot and raid china for money during the initial years of mongolian rule.
