IAFS 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Sex Trafficking, Maternal Death
Document Summary
Problems that disproportionately affect women: lack of legal protection/status, lack of property rights, lack of physical security, higher poverty rates, lack of access to education. More than of the world"s unpaid labor is done by women. This unpaid labor amounts to around 20% of the world"s gdp. Women in development was very moderate approach. American style feminism which focuses on individualism, deemphasizes family. Assumes women all have the same issues, resulting in separate programs from development. Gender in development = more radical approach, says problems can"t be solved by. Adding women because women have always been there, policies are what is flawed. Successful development doesn"t target women, it empowers them. Central moral challenge of this generation is gender inequality. In less developed areas, there are less women because they do not live as long. Best ways to fight this: educate women, provide birth control/health clinics. Educated women have less children: bring them into the labor force.
