IPHY 2420 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Saturated Fat, Lipoprotein, Low-Density Lipoprotein
Document Summary
There are 4 types of lipoproteins: chylomicrons, which transport dietary fat from the intestine to the liver as discussed in the previous lecture, vldls, which transport triglycerides to tissues, such as fat to the muscle tissues. Vldls transport endogenous as opposed to dietary/exogenous fats: ldls, which transport cholesterol throughout the body. Ldls are bad but we still need a small amount in our bodies. Too much ldl will cause heart disease and/or stroke due to a plaque buildup in either the heart or the brain: hdl, which is good. Hdls remove cholesterol from the body making our bodies healthier. Total fat digestion is supposed to be around 20-35% of the diet, the average for most. Saturated fat digestion is suggested to be less than 10%. The suggested trans-fat intake is suggested to be 0 grams. The average for most americans is around 1-2 grams. The suggested omega 6 is around 5-10%, most americans are over this amount.
