Document Summary

Chapter 5: laboratory diagnosis of viral diseases and working with viruses in the research laboratory. Aseptic meningitis: is the infection of the meninges which are the membranes that surround the brain and the spinal cord. Severe neurological problems such as seizures; brain damage; paralysis and death. Spinal tap or lumbar puncture is a procedure that is performed to collect cerebrospinal fluid [csf] Preliminary tests use csf to test for rbcs; neutrophil and lymphocyte counts; protein and glucose levels. High levels of wbcs [more than 1000] indicate bacterial meningitis. Low levels of wbcs [less than 100] indicate viral meningitis. High protein levels may indicate a sign of injury; nerve inflammation; a tumor; bleeding or infection. Low or high levels of glucose may indicate the presence of inflammation; bacterial or fungal infection or a tumor. Acyclovir was administered as an antiviral drug to treat herpesvirus infections. *pcr was performed on the csf specimens to screen for different viral pathogens.
