Larger, slower eeg waves (theta and delta), less emg, no eog. Accounts for most (6/8 hours) of sleep in adults but less as sleep progresses. Stages 3 and 4 are the deepest stages of sleep. Characterized by the most movement - flailing, tossing and turning, even somnambulism and somniloquy. Much less dreaming but night terrors in children and sleep eating in adults. Short rapid eeg, no emg, high eog. Accounts for about 2 hours of sleep in adults interspersed between bouts of nrem sleep; amount increases as the sleep period progresses. Muscles occasionally twitch but large movements are not common - motor neuron activity is inhibited during rem sleep - sleep muscle atonia. Defects in sleep muscle atonia are associated with sleep paralysis and sleep behavior disorder - when we move around in our sleep. Is characterized by much more dreaming and more vivid, narrative (storyline/theme) Nearly all mammals, many birds and even some reptiles appear to have rem sleep.
