Interviewed adolescents (boys) in juvie and asked about their relationship with their mother: juvenile thieves study, fear, depression, detachment = indifference to other people. Didn"t have a lot of emotional connection with people: 44 juvenile thieves, dis-attachment, early, long separation from their mother. Infants: attachment signals/behaviors (crying, smiling, vocalizing) have survival value: caretaker: parental responsiveness = consistent, prompt, and warm responses to signals. In-home observational study: n- 26, newborn 1 year, laboratory visit strange situation. Intervention studies: van den boom (1994), low social economic status, mother is primary caretaker (n=100, two groups: three, 2-hr sessions from age 6-9 months. Intervention: mothers taught to be more responsive: control: attention only, results: intervention infants were more securely attached at 12 months than controls, secure intervention: 62, insecure intervention: 38: secure control: 22, insecure control: 78, child contributions, behavioral genetics, attachment classifications equally similar for. Development (nichd) study of early child care: method, 10 cities, strange situation at 15 months.
