3.6 Molecular Compound: Formulas and Names
Binary Compounds
Acids
3.6.1 Binary Molecular Compounds: AmBn
A, B are nonmetals/metalloids
Common names are H2O, H2O2, NH3, CH4
A is farther left in a period or closest to the bottom of a group (named first)
B is named last and ends with “ide”
Use prefixes to name if compound contains subscripts
Never use mono for A
If there are vowels drop last letter in prefix; if not leave it
HI(g): hydrogen iodide. NF3: nitrogen trifluoride, SF6: sulfure hexafluoride, S2F10:
disulfiram decafluoride, N2O: dinitrogen monoxide, N2O2: dinitrogen tetroxide
3.6.2 Naming Acids
Acid: gives H+ ions in water
Pure form: hydrogen chloride gas
Dissolved in water: hydrochloric acid
Reacts (dissolves) with many metals
Oxyacid: contains H, O, and a third element
Ex. HNO3: nitric acid, H2SO4: sulfuric acid
Acid Dissociation (Ionization)
HCl(aq) > H+(aq) + Cl-(aq)
HNO3(aq) > H+(aq) + NO3-(aq)
H2SO4(aq) > H+(aq) + HSO4-(aq)
HSO4-(aq) > H+(aq) + SO42-(aq)
Insert Important Acids and Their Anions From Lecture
3.7 Formula Mass and Molar Mass
Formula Mass (weight): sum of atomic masses of all atoms in formula
Molecular substances = molecular mass (g/mol)
molar mass (g/mol) = formula mass (amu) numerically
Ex 1. Phosphorus: P4
FM = MM = 4(30.97)n= 123.88 amu = 123.88 g/mol
Ex 2. Sulfur dioxide: SO2
FM = MM = 32.07 amu + 2(16.00 amu) = 67.04 amu = 67.04 g/mol
m: mass, M: molar mass, n: mols
m = nM, n = m/M, M = m/n
3.8 Mass Percent Composition
Mass percentage of each element in the compound
Can be calculated from chemical formulas
3.8.2 Calculations Using Chemical Formulas
