Catatonic symptoms: motor problem, including holding the body in bizarre rigid postures, curling up in a fetal position, resisting movement, or pacing aimlessly. Early theories blamed mothers for being overprotective, smothering, rejecting, and controlling, or blamed family interaction. Rival hypothesis (widely believed now): family members" responses don"t cause schizophrenia, but their behavior is a typical response to the stress of living with severely disturbed person. High levels of expressed emotion are risk factor. Family members responding with hostility, criticism, or over involvement do increase risk for relapse. Might be caused by marijuana use in adolescence, but association could go either way. But could teens with schizophrenia be using weed to calm themselves down. Twin and adoption studies point to large genetic component. If you have a sibling with schizophrenia, your chances of developing it are at 10x greater than average person. Identical twins of schizophrenic patient have 3x greater risk than fraternal twin, and 50x greater risk than average person.
